Talking n00b and few questions... [PICS]

Hey Guys,

So last friday I picked up a beautiful Melbourne Red 328i Sportline 6MT with all of the options! I've loved it so far, previously had an A4 so I'm used to the german car scene but this is a whole new game. I've spent most of my time trying to figure out how to work everything. I must admit the parking assistant is pretty cool even though I didn't originally want it.

So my questions, I have 3:
1. Has anyone else noticed that the parking/hand brake doesn't seem to grab that well? I have to pull mine almost as far up as it will go so the car doesn't roll down an incline. I'm not really trusting it at this point... I'm hoping it can be adjusted soon.
2. I put gas in it last night and I could not get it to fill it to a full tank, it kept shutting off after about half a tank. I've only done it once so that pump might've been bad but we also have a Porsche Cayenne that has done the same thing. So annoying! Does this happen to anyone else?

Lastly, this is a question about an F30 Loaner I got while the clearbra was being put on. It was an automatic luxury line btw
3. As I was driving this 328i I noticed that the speedometer seemed to get stuck. I was in eigth gear cruising down the parkway at about 45 MPH and it was indicating 5MPH. After stopping and restarting a few times it started to move but very jerky like the second hand on a clock and would occasionally get stuck. I've never seen a modern car do that....?

Finally Pix!

Hey, congrats on the new car and welcome here!

Unfortunately (well fortunately for me) I have not experienced any issues with my handbrake, fuel tank (fills up no problem) or speedo.

I would get the back to your dealer and have those issues checked out. The handbrake should be easily adjustable but not sure about the other two issues

Gorgeous looking car though!

Wink

First off, i want to congratulate you on getting a 6MT !!!

Not too many people in the states are getting one, and so Thanks for keeping the Manual Transmission Alive!

Second: I will not answer your questions 2 and 3, since i didn't encounter them...

As for the first questions, i noticed the same thing with my car...
but since our F30 are still quite new, fresh from the factory, i would guess and think this is due to the new brake not having been fully breaking in yet...

i would give it a few weeks, if not at least a months before things settle in...

Please enjoy and share your car with us! via pics of course!

And welcome among us!

Thanks for the enthusiastic welcome!!!

I'm excited to be here, this is my first experience with BMW in a long time. Was in the Audi scene for many years.

Thanks for the info about the handbrake I will try that, fortunately I don't have to park on inclines that much. I have tried yanking it up a bunch of times, I heard that can bring it into adjustment.

I will try to fill it up at a different place tomorrow and report back!

I need to get some better pictures of it, I gotta admit it's a beautiful car so happy I went with the red! I had to have the 6MT, my Audi was manual and I just couldn't give that up. I had the dealer search far and wide for this car because I wanted all the toys and lucky for me (and them) they were able to find it for me and ship it down!

I wanted one, I love MT but... not too many here getting it and I didn't want to risk the resale value.. my CA even told me he only has one customer who actually buys MT's and it's only a small island

For the parking brake issue, you might try running up to 30MPH or so then lightly applying the parking brake to scrub off the brake surface. Do this a couple times. The manual even mentions you should do this occasionally.

This will nicely clean off any corrosion and is, in fact, a good thing to do.

I assume these cars still require crawling under the car and adjusting the parking brake at the wheel (after loosening the cables in the handle). If they need adjustment, this will be covered by the warranty.

Funny you should mention the fuel issue as I have experienced this on my previous 2007 328, my current 2010 328 as well as my wife's 2011 X3. I often have to reengage the pump handle to get the tank to full.

The fuel tank issue is a pressure release within the tank, it just means that something between the tank, carbon filter and release into the air is somewhat restricted...

Thanks! I actually only took them with my old iPhone 4. Need to get out the real camera and shoot some better ones.

I still have yet to go back to the petrol station but I'm going to stop by this afternoon to see if the different station does the same thing!

I had the fuel tank thing happen once in my Jag. It only happened once so I think it was an issue with the pump or nozzle. let us know if it happens again.

The only warning with the fuel thing is to keep an eye on your tank size and know when the pump is turning off because you are truly at full. I pushed my luck a couple of times I guess and got some fuel in the carbon filter which then needed to be replaced. Whoops.

Well I went to a different filling station today. Filled up with no problems! What a relief. It's interesting that our cars only have a 15.8 gallon tank, my old A4 had like an 18.3 gallon one!

congratulations on your new car, its looking gorgeous! I'm a manual transmission fan too. I love to down-shift and use engine braking. To feel the braking torsion from the rear of the car, the gearbox hum while engine braking and a potential drift at the end of it have always amazed me.
In the previous thread, we were discussing about the elimination of engine drag during engine braking inorder to improve brake force regeneration in the F30. I was wondering if the manual transmission continues to be as much fun without the engine drag. Thx.

I believe the gas tank size is typically determined with a specific range in mind. Better fuel economy results in smaller tanks.

I've had the fuel pump cut off prematurely on all sorts of cars. I think it mostly happens on pumps that are pushing the fuel out a bit too quickly. As you know, fuel pumps cut off when they detect fuel coming back into the nozzle. When the fuel pumps too quickly for it to smoothly run into the fuel tank it spurts backwards and causes the pump to shut off. Usually holding the pump trigger part way down and/or repositioning the nozzle helps.

You got the best interior design in my opinion. Piano black > aluminum. As for you issues, I have that on my Lexus but its worse. It's a bad pressure valve on the gas tank

How much did the clear bra cost you at BMW?

While I purchased the clear bra through the BMW dealer they are not actually the ones that put it on. I dropped my car off with them and they took it to another place that does the actual application of the clear bra. They did a very good job and even applied it under all of the high traffic areas. For instance, the inside of the exterior door handles, the edges of the door, the door sills, and the rear bumper under the trunk lid.

I will try to post some more pics, it's scheduled to go in for a detail soon, I want to make sure it's looking as good as possible. Especially after the 7,500 miles I've already put on it!
