this HP war is getting silly. they need to start losing some weight instead of piling on the HP. guess it's cheaper to make more power than to lose weight. at this rate we'll see 1000 HP mustangs/corvettes/vipers from the factory in a few years. RIDICULOUS!!!!

The BOSS 302 and standard Mustang GT 5.0 put down the numbers quite nicely. Its like Ford figured it out. Now the '13 GT500 introduces launch control. It could get interesting.

I totally agree. I can't wait for big hp in a light weight car.

I cannot wait for this car, honestly I think we are in the best time for car enthusiasts EVER. 660 HP for 60k, are you shitting me? With an exhaust, intake, pulley and a tune (the standard bot ons for GT500's) this car is going to put out near as makes no difference 1,000HP I mean come on. With a Kenne Belle who knows what these things are going to do, jeezus Im in awe of what can be bought off a showroom floor for a reasonable amount of money.

This would be the corvette. A car like the mustang is created to make money and sell in huge numbers FIRST. I'm sure they sell more mustangs than anything else besides the F-150, this entails that it will have things like space, practicality, features etc. as a priority. Performance will be after the fact, and it is clearly not suffering with this system. However I don't believe we will ever see a lightweight mustang.

Again, it's called the corvette. 500HP and around 3k lbs (I think) or 630 and a little above 3K (again, I'm not sure). I would call that lightweight, how many cars out there w/ over 300hp weigh near 3k lbs?

I'd like Ford to put this or even the Boss engine into something with 4 real seats and AWD. Two or four doors, I'd take either as long as it's priced similarly.

no doubt the Z06 is your best bang for the buck. now imagine a 2k lbs Z06 made from a CF tub with exotic alloys. I think that's called a Zonda

Here's my take on the GT500 vs. ZL1.

GT500 without a doubt will be quicker and faster in the straight line.
ZL1 will be quicker on a road course.

How did I surmise this? The ZL1 already killed the Boss 302 on the road course. The Boss 302 is the "handling" Mustang - lighter with adjustable shocks set up for road racing. The ZL1 outhandled the Boss on most every turn of the road course. The GT500 is heavier than the Boss and will not handle as well. The ZL1 will gap the GT500 big time in corners. Then, try to put 660+ hp down coming out of corners with a live rear axle. I'm thinking it's going to be difficult. The ZL1 with the trick suspension (independent and magna shocks) will again have the advantage.

I definitely think the GT500 is aimed at the ZL1 and NOT the Corvette.

Props to Ford for coming out with this car! It's going to be fun to watch the dust settle.

You can order your 1,000hp Shelby now

The only same-day, same-driver comparison of the previous (112HP less, smaller rear brakes, less capable diff, etc...) SVTPP Shelby and the BOSS that I know of was done by InsideLine at I think the Streets of Willow (i.e. not necessarily a HP-heavy track). The Shelby won (time-wise). So, now that there are all those upgrades I listed above, I fully expect the Shelby to at the very least compete with the ZL1.

It was in Ford's best interest to push all they could about the BOSS being a track car so I'm not surprised the hoopla surrounding the Shelby's road course prowess was dwarfed by what was provided for the BOSS, but the previous Shelby wasn't as slow around a course as people tend to believe.... And the new one is guaranteed to be a good deal faster.

Don't forget the ZL1 is some 220-ish(?) lbs heavier than the new Shelby, and is down 82HP.... The MR suspension (or whatever the acronym for it is) and IRS will most definitely help the ZL1, but it's too early to say if it still turns a faster track time than the Shelby. We shall see! I know there was a '13 Shelby at the 'Ring not too long ago, I wonder if they did any hero laps.

Anyway, if I was doing decent track duty, I would probably not opt for the Shelby anyway. There's better cooling than on the previous Shelby, but you're still going to be prone to heat soak. The same is true for the ZL1, not sure why they're marketing that car as a track car, it'll eat through brakes and tires so fast and suffer from heat soak anyway.... But that's just my opinion.

Lol Yep!!! That is an interesting comparison. Never thought about it but I think they are similar proportions too. Aren't the Zondas not legal here due to safety standards? That kind of proves a point in itself, all of the regulations don't even give manufacturers the option of cars being lightweight. Thats why I respect cars like the BRZ os S2000's, the BRZ was no doubt a difficult engineering task.

I think they are on many levels competitors, just as the ZL1 is. Even though the GT500 is more rough around the edges and is more of a purpose built track car I bet many buyers cross shop the two and end up choosing the car that best suits their needs i.e. more refined car w/nicer appointments vs a more bare bones car that is not only noiser but rougher riding. While I agree I don't think Ford necessarily had the CTS-V on the radar when they built the GT500.

Road and Track compared the CTSV vs the prev gen GT500. And I trust there will be new head-to-head since the CTS-V was the victor. GT500 owners on the Team Shebly forum frequently compare the two and Shelby comes up on the CTS-V subforum.
